What to do with those FIGS!
Whenever I buy figs at the farmers market or supermarket, someone asks me "what are you going to do with those?".
Most people have never even tasted a fresh fig.
If you aren't of Italian or of Mediterranean descent, why would you have?
When I was a kid, I thought figs were only in Fig Newtons (and I LOVE dried figs!).
Since growing my own figs, I now have an arsenal of fig recipes.
Yes, you can just eat them.....not a bad thing, but why not put them to good use?
They are only around for 3 weeks or so in September.
I make Naan bread pizzas..........I caramelize sliced onions and splash them w/ balsamic vinegar.
Spread the onions on top of Naan bread or pizza dough and sprinkle with feta cheese and sliced figs.
Bake only a few minutes until crispy and drizzle w/ balsamic syrup and fresh herbs. DELICIOUS.
How about baking that fantastic David Tanis Fig & Almond Tart?
It's one of my favorite desserts.......recipe here.
Another great idea is pairing roasted or fresh figs w/ yogurt.
A sprinkle of chopped pistachios and drizzle of honey with some fresh mint.
So healthy and delicious. You could even serve these for dessert.
So, now you know what to do with fresh figs.....now go and find some!

Everyone in NJ and NY can grow figs! (especially in Brooklyn!).......but....you have to wrap your trees in the winter with burlap for protection.
Since my trees are small and in pots, I can bring them inside a dark stairwell (basement Bilco doors), and leave it dormant (no water, no light, no nothing).
When spring comes, we bring them outside.........
