Good Summer Reads & a Giveaway
Most people take a good novel or best seller to the beach. I take a cookbook.
So what am I reading these hot summer days, you ask?
I am reading these 3 new books & one more is on my list.
They are not only enjoyable to read, but have some great looking recipes, which I plan on trying out soon. Stay tuned.
The first book is from the fantastic Brooklyn restaurant called Frankies Spuntino.
Spuntino means "little snacks" in Italian, or a place you can get a little snack.
I should have named my blog "Stacey's Spuntino".
It's called The Frankies Spuntino Kitchen Companion & Cooking Manual.
There are pretty drawings inside and some very simple homey Italian recipes from the restaurants.
These 2 boyhood pals from Queens, NY (Frank & Frank) have turned a little idea into a big business. They have 3 popular NY restaurants now.
I can't wait to try the cavatelli w/ sausage and brown butter sage.
Book #2 I am enjoying is called Poor Girl Gourmet, written by Rhode Island food blogger Amy McCoy.
Just because you are on a budget, doesn't mean you have to skimp on good food.
I highly recommend this nice book with good photos and recipes.
Book #3 was recommended by Lisa from Delaware (a reader of this blog), and is called Mediterranean Summer, and I am thoroughly enjoying it!
A true story of an American chef hired by a wealthy Italian couple to cook for them on their private yacht.
I love reading it, all the while imagining the beautiful markets of fresh & wonderful produce in Provence and Italy, cruising along the Costa Bella & the Cote d'Azur.
There are great recipes along with a dream trip along the French & Italian Riviera.
Book #4 is due out on August 3.
It is called Georgia's Kitchen, by author Jenny Nelson.
It is a new food fiction novel about a NYC chef who receives a bad restaurant review. Devastated, she goes to Tuscany to sharpen her skills as a restaurateur & cook and leaves her career, fiance and life back home for a new life in Italy. It sounds exciting and anything that involves food, Italy and romance is for me. I can't wait to read it.
The publisher of Georgia's Kitchen is giving two of my readers a copy of this new book, so just leave a comment and tell us what you are reading this summer and on Wednesday the winners will be randomly chosen.....and it doesn't have to be a cookbook!

study of how food production and mores changed during the industrial revolution. So much of which impacts us today. A whole chapter on the history of breakfast toast!

and for some light reading (lol) Race of a Lifetime, the story of the 2008 Presidential election campaign. Gripping, even though you know the ending
The thing is, this has been my Winter reading list as we're feeling the cold here in Australia.

It's James Beard's food columns. No pictures and no need for them either. Just short stores and still appropriate for today, even thought it was originally published way back when.
I've had Mediterranean Summer on my wish list at Amazon for ages. Somehow it's never gotten purchased. Guess I better do something about that!

Right now, when I'm not in bed, I'm reading "Goat Song", a delightful story of an author and hi artist wife, who get fed up with New York and move to Vermont and start raising goats. It is a witty account how they learned everything from breeding, milking and making cheese. There is even a little bit of “goat porn” to make you laugh out loud
I just finished Kitchen Chinese and now I'm reading Why Italians Love to Talk About Food.
(2010 Atlas& Company)Non-fiction.
For 10 years, Dominique was the Editor-In-Chief of “House and Garden” until Condé Nast ceased publishing the magazine. Dominique was laid off. The book describes her year-long journey of finding herself (and work) again. Message: There is more to life than work becoming your identity. Wonderful read, especially for those who are unemployed.
Also, I love any fiction or mystery books which include recipes (what a surprise!) I love the series by Joanne Fluke (Kensington Publishing Inc) with titles like, “Cherry Cheesecake Murder,” “Key Lime Pie Murder,” “Peach Cobbler Murder” each with a dozen or so recipes tied to the story plot. Is that fun or what???

I'm also having fun with two cookbooks--Phila Inquirer In a Hurry Cookbook by Elaine Tait, a revered (and retired) restaurant critic and foodie, and Talk with your Mouth Full by the Hearty Boys (1st Food Network Stars).
